The All-important Nappy Bag - What Goes In There?

Congratulations, expecting parents! As you prepare to welcome your little one into the world, you're probably starting to think about all the essential items you'll need to care for your new bundle of joy. One of the most important items on your list should be a good nappy bag.

A nappy bag is your trusty companion as you navigate life with a new baby. It's the bag that carries all the essentials you need to keep your little one happy and healthy while you're out and about.

As a parent, packing a well-stocked nappy bag will become second-nature but for first-time parents this can sometimes be a baffling experience. Let us help you! We'll answer the question, "What goes in there?" and discuss the important features to consider when choosing a nappy bag.

What Goes In There?

As a new mother, you'll want to make sure you have everything you need to care for your baby. Here are some essentials to pack in your nappy bag:

  1. Nappies: Make sure you pack enough nappies to last you through your trip out, as well as a disposable plastic bag for bubs soiled nappies in-case there are no bins readily available at change time.
  2. Wipes: These are essential for cleaning up any messes your little one may make. We recommend unscented water-based wipes that will be gentle on bubs skin.
  3. Nappy cream: A must-have in case of nappy rash. The most commonly used are Sudocrem or Bepanthen which you can find at the local chemist or grocery store.
  4. Changing mat: A portable changing mat is essential for changing your baby's nappy on the go. It works two-fold, ensuring baby is lying on a clean surface and also that the area you're changing in is safe from any surprise leaks. Our Bambini nappy bags come standard with a water-proof changing mat - you can check them out here.
  5. Spare clothes: Having a spare outfit or two on hand is a life-saver when accidents occur or in-case the weather changes suddenly and you need to layer baby up.
  6. Bottles: If you're bottle-feeding, make sure to pack enough bottles and formula to last for your trip out.
  7. Snacks: If your baby has started eating solid foods, pack some healthy snacks to keep them satisfied. If you're breast-feeding (and even if you're not) pack some snacks for yourself too to keep your energy and supply up.
  8. Toys: Baby's favourite toy is a must to keep your little one entertained while you shop/conversate/eat.

    Bonus tip:
If your little one has taken a shining to a toy or book, make sure to keep a spare of the same in case you lose the original. As a parent, there's nothing worse than when you lose a favourite blankie or plushie and realise the manufacturer no-longer makes that toy!

Important Nappy Bag Features To Look Out For

When it comes to choosing a nappy bag, there are a few important features to consider:

  1. Size: Make sure the bag is big enough to hold all your essentials but not so big that it's cumbersome to carry around.
  2. Pockets: Look for a bag with plenty of pockets to help you stay organised and make it easy to find what you need.
  3. Durability: A nappy bag is going to get a lot of use, so make sure it's made from durable materials that can withstand wear and tear.
  4. Comfort: A good nappy bag should be comfortable to carry, whether it's over your shoulder or on your back.
  5. Style: Last but not least, choose a nappy bag that fits your style and personality. There are plenty of stylish options out there, so don't settle for something you don't love.

Our Geneva nappy bag is our preferred choice. It's a tote style measuring 38 x 32 x 9 cm with heaps of room (and pockets) for all the essentials. Constructed using a mix of fabric & eco leather, the textured vegan leather exterior panels ensure high durability and water resistance. This basically means it's easy to wipe clean.

The adjustable wide shoulder strap also means you can wear it however you like, cross-body, over-shoulder or held as a hand-bag!
